Sandra Answers Art Questions

You have questions... I have ANSWERS:

7 Art Questions:

1. How do I find time for drawing? Look for

snippets of time. You have spare moments all throughout

your day and if you carry your art with you, you

can draw anywhere!

I carry my art EVERYWHERE in this cool  BAGfolio.

2. How do I take high quality pictures of my art?

SCAN IT!

When the fire burned my home and took 900 pieces

of art I was so glad that I had scanned a lot of the

pieces into jpeg files. Those files can

be used to republish the art or reprint it.

  • Be sure to scan your art at a high resolution.
  • Tell the clerk you want it in JPEG format (not a TIFF or PDF).
  • Scan at 300 dpi. That's the resolution needed
for printing and/or entering art contests.

Kinkos and Office Depot can scan your art.

Office Depot will scan your image for about

$2-3.00 per image.

Store scanned images on a CD. Make several CDS

and mail one to a relative who lives far away

in case a tragedy strikes your town.

Keep one in a safety deposit box and make

extra CDS so you can mail them to art contests.

3. Should I keep my art in my sketchbook

or take it out?

  • I keep my art in my book until it's finished. That way it's

protected and handy in case I have a spare minute

        to draw.

  •  Once I finish a drawing, I store it in an archival plastic

sleeve so that it won't get damaged by bugs or light

or humidity. I store my art in flat files because the plastic

sleeves will bend and never return to their original shape

if they are not stored flat. When I cart them while

I'm drawing I keep them in a flat portfolio to keep

          the sleeves flat.

Note: As you can see from the photo on the right,

  • When I work on individual sheets of paper (instead of

a tablet, I always keep my drawing in the sturdy plastic

sleeve. It keeps the art from bending, protects it

from spills and finger prints and damage.

  • I also keep my photo reference in the plastic sleeve

so that I don't lose it while I'm drawing.

4. What's the best way to frame or preserve art?

  • When you are SURE you are finished with
your work, spray it with a workable fixative.
  • If you use a workable fixative you can still
draw on top of the fixative but you cannot
        erase anything under the fixative.
  • Spray the fixative OUTDOORS because it's toxic.
  • Wear a mask so you don't breathe in the fixative.
  • Leave it outdoors for awhile to dry.

  • Always use an archival mat board for framing.
  • Other boards will burn a brown hole in your
paper over time and cause it to disintegrate.
  • Use a mat to keep the paper off of the glass.
  • Direct contact with glass can damage paper.

  • NEVER use any tape except artist's archival tape.
  • Other types of tape will burn a brown spot in your paper
        over time.

  • Use an archival foam core for the backing to

       protect art from bugs

  • Use archival glass to keep the sun from fading
       your art.
  • Display away from direct sun or humidity.

5.What kind of paper should I be using?

As editor for Art Materials Today and Michaels' Arts

and Crafts Magazine, it was my job to test papers

and see which ones work best for various methods.

Papers that Produce the BEST Results:

For faces, I love using the brown paper

below. This color is included in your colored

pencil paper packet.

6. How do I keep smudges off my paper?

Slip a glossy photo under your drawing hand

with the glossy side down. This will

prevent you from gathering graphite on

your hand which would then smudge your work.

If you don't use a glossy photo, the graphite will stick

to the paper and smudge when you reposition it.

7. Should I work from a black and white or

color photo when I do a graphite drawing?

It's much easier to see the values on a black and white

photo. Convert your photo with Picassa or Photoshop

or Photoshop Elements and print it large... I generally

print it 8.5x11 so I can see the details well enough to

draw. Office Depot can also convert your photo to

a large black and white copy very inexpensively

while you wait (if their copy shop isn't busy).
